"We Know What We're Fighting For"

Is it really naive to think that a song might have something to do with the thumpin' great majority the Progressive Conservatives won in Newfoundland's recent election?

Maybe.

On the other hand, go listen to it (mp3).

Well done, Danny Williams! Congratulations, Newfoundland and Labrador!

Now...any budding songwriters like Darrell Power (formerly of Great Big Sea) in BC?

Catchy tune.

The celt-rock sound is new to my American ears, but no doubt plays well to the locals, as it was obviously meant to.

The power of music has been used since ancient times to stir the passions of the soul, and that power has been the downfall of more than one ruler.

Patriotic songs have always carried us to war. Millions of men and women have marched to their deaths with such songs on their lips.

Spiritual hymns draw the faithful and sustain them in hard times. Music and religion have always been closely tied.

Anything that reaches people and influences their actions is a power that can be used for good or ill. I am surprised that, in this age of media manipulation, that more politicians have not taken advantage of it.

No shit. I heard it once, and it kept repeating itself in my mind's ear. Doesn't hurt that I can get right behind the sentiment, either.

So this is gonna be one of our performance songs, I think. I may filk some new lyrics to broaden the scope a bit. All I need is for Darrell to agree...
