Procreate For The State*
The expression, "Gimme a fuckin' break!" is about to take on a whole new meaning in Moscow, Russia.
"It has declared Sept. 12 the Day of Conception and for the third year running is giving couples time off from work to procreate.
(...)
"Couples who 'give birth to a patriot'' during the June 12 festivities win money, cars, refrigerators and other prizes."
Yeah, and what happens if, twenty or thirty years later, that new "patriot" decides to emigrate to somewhere else? Will the government show up on the parents' doorstep and demand their washing machine back?
All this hysteria to propagate the species at an every-increasing rate is unfathomable. Why? What's the purpose of outstripping the rest of the world in population growth? Is there, like, some kind of international contest among world governments to see who can out-litter whom? What am I missing here?

More people to tax?
If a government wants to accomplish anything, it needs to have enough workers available to complete the task. I'm sure there was at least one pharaoh concerned about the birth rate when his pyramid was half-finished.
Most of the developed countries are in the same situation with reduced birth rates. Sweden is a great example. When the living is easy and the taxes are high, why introduce a child to the situation?
There are 2 ways to increase population: increase birth rate or increase immigration. By trying so hard to increase birth rate, Russia is saying that they don't want to increase immigration.
There are a lot of nations out there with the opposite problem: too many people. If the developed nations would open up immigration a bit, the populations would balance out eventually.
Oh, but that means letting FOREIGNERS into your country. Oh, the chaos! Oh, the madness!
If your educational system can handle the strain of teaching newbies your mother tongue, they won't be FOREIGNERS for long, will they?
Get over the xenophobia, people.
Dez, I don't understand the whole "gotta have more people" at all, not matter whether it's through immigration or a higher birth rate.
Why gotta have more people? Why not fewer people? Fewer people need fewer services, so taxes can be lowered (yeah, I know that's heresy to any government...but the whole concept of government is fast becoming heresy to me)
The human race is outstripping its available environment...the only living species to do so, and we know it, and we're not only doing nothing to stop it, but articles like this one show that we are actively trying to escalate it.
The entire species is propagating at a suicidal rate.
Remember Chimera... suicide is painless! Taxes... not so much...
First sentence--inspired. I wish I'd thought of that.
