Emerson! Recalling David Emerson!

It seems that Vancouver-Kingsway turncoat MP David Emerson is unhappy with the reaction that was caused by his turning his back on his constituents and embracing a party for which they had not voted.

Aaaawwwwww...poor baby...*pat pat*

He says he's unhappy that his kids are suffering because of his perfidy. Well, shit, son -- who brought it on? Bet he wasn't too unhappy when his kids were the toast of the school, and being voted "most popular" because daddy was an important man with the government, hm?

Wanting to have his cake and eat it, too, he is.

Well, his constituents now want to become former constituents, and they've drafted a recall petition to that effect:

To: Government Of Canada

We the undersigned believe that David Emerson elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament for the riding of Vancouver Kingsway should be immediately recalled and a by election held so that the people of Vancouver Kingsway and in general all Canadians can be represented by the party and candidate of their choice.

David Emerson should immediately resign his current position in the Conservative Party and his cabinet position of Minister of International Trade. The people of Canada and in Particular the people of Vancouver Kingsway deserve proper democratic rights.

Sincerely,

(The Undersigned)

And, not to put too fine a point on things, but I wonder how Kanman Wong feels right now? You know -- the CPC candidate for Vancouver-Kingsway? The one who actually ran for election as the CPC candidate?

Good post, and as a few around the web are saying, why can't he still be a Liberal, but be a government minister if Harper wants it that way. Do you have any idea how good that would look to Canadians. It would make the appearance that Harper was hiring on merit rather than voting strategy...

Thank you -- and I've been wondering that, myself. Harper is, in fact, looking for merit; why else poach the one he considers to be the best from the opposition? And even though there are lots of people trashing him from hell to breakfast, Emerson is apparently very knowledgeable and experienced regarding softwood lumber.

Having Emerson sit in a Tory cabinet as a Liberal cabinet minister would be...weird. But doable. The PM can appoint anyone he wants to cabinet, and they do not even have to be elected. Lots of people are going to think of Fortier, but I'm thinking of Zacchiardelli (did I spell that right?) -- the RCMP commissioner who was appointed by Chretien.

The only constraint on having an opposition member in the cabinet would be that he could not be a member of the caucus. And that is easily handled with briefings by his deputy minister.

Here is a petition for Michal Fortier to resign until he runs in a by-election for a seat in the House.

Sign the Petition for Fortier to resign and run in a by-election

Thanks anonymous. I'll leave your link in case someone wants to sign it. But as I said, there is no requirement for a cabinet member to actually be elected to a seat. Harper didn't even have to put him in the Senate, really. The only thing that comes with being elected is a caucus membership...

There may be no legal recourse here because he was elected consistent with his campaign but there may be other legal alternatives.

One could start a David Emerson blog so that everyone is constantly reminded about what kind of man he is. He needs to be reminded every day about this.

People could parade in front of his house with a sign demanding he call a by-election. This would keep it in the public eye. The press would love it. Anyone for camping out?

Put pressure on him and his immediate family. If his kids complain enough he will do the right thing for them. Everyone has a vulnerable spot.

The people now have the power of the Internet.

Any other ideas?

There is nothing wrong with Emerson that an ounze of lead would not fix.

Somebody has a great post on how lame the Liberals softwood deal was and why Emerson was instrumental in squashing it, I'll see if I can find it...
